About the Collection

Having worked up various iterations and printed proofs, some letter-sized, some 11x17, each interpretation represents in tones familiar more than 100 years ago both elegy and homage.

Antietam National Battlefield Park has been often described as tranquil, and while it is that and quite a few other moods beside--educational, recreational, familial even--it is a property that yet holds the bones of many of its dead and contains the echos, visual certainly, palpable possibly, of a single day's armed violence involving 125,000 troops gathered from every corner of the country.

Casualties (National Park Service figures): 22,700, including between 3,650 and 7,640 dead, the latter figure extrapolated as a percentage of reported missing and wounded who may well have died in the days following the battle.

I have tried with this project to turn back the clock some while moving the heart forward.  It remains in progress as of this posting (May 21, 2008) and fits well an associated interest in contemporary conflicts, not the least those mired in civil disputes and pitting brother against brother.
